Losing weight with hyperthyroid
I have been on methomozole (I think that is how you spell it) and they have changed my dosage three times. I had to beg the dr. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease after a lot of tests. The doctor then upped my dosage to 20 mg and POOF. I am thinking about having my thyroid removed because this roller coaster of ups and downs, weight gain, and changing medications have just done a toll on my emotions and I dont know how much more I can take. It came off so quickly doing low carb and exercizing for an hour a day at the gym. I have a wonderful son and boyfriend, I am doing ok in my college classes and should graduate soon, but my weight is constantly on my mind. I wish I would have, but am going to make up for it now. Once diagnosed, I was prescribed 10 mg Methimazole. My doctor says that we are in a small percentage that gain even though we are hyperthyroid. People do not understand the problem we have, as the meds I take for my Type 1 Diabetes also does not help me loose weight. 5, then 15 then 10 mg. have never been an overweight person in my life. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid in July 2009. You describe me to a tee. I, too, want another child, but my cycles were irregular to begin with, but have become regular since being put on Propylthiouracil, though I am not sure I am ovulating. I am up to 150 and I am sick of gaining more even though I work out like crazy. I have nodules and am taking a small dose of levothyroxin but it has not helped with the weight gain. Someone came into my place of work (a bank) and told me I get bigger everytime he sees me. In his defense he thought I was pregnant but either way I had to excuse myself so I could go cry in the bathroom. Once I got on PTU, it stablized, but now my metabolism is slowed because of the meds, which makes it really hard to lose weight. I was pregnant when I was first diagnosed so radiation is not an option since I still want to get pregnant again soon. Because my energy level was soooo low I could barely function, I knew I was on too much methimazole. I charted my weight, testing my theory for about 6 months, and now for the past 3 months I have abstained from alcohol completely and the weight has come off (20 lbs). Hi,just wanted to find out what everone else thinks about weight gain.

I was about 200 in my sophomore year of highschool, but by college even though I had an active livestyle, I boosted up to 290 pounds and by the time I was out of college I weighed 310 lbs. People and doctors look at me as if I am some sort of pig because you are suppose to loose weight when you have a hyper active thyroid and I gained weight. But during that month, I was able to lose 15 lbs. I have gained 30 pounds within one year. I thought it was the beta-blockers I was on, so I greatly decreased how much I was taking. I have been trying to loose weight, I walked EVERY DAY during the summer and still gained weight. I developed a rash from the PTU and was switched after about a month without meds to Methimazole. Eat right and doing exercise do not work so what to do. to run labs early so we could switch. After college I played dance dance revolution literally 3 hours a day for 3 months, and was down about 60 pounds. biopsy was normal. I still seem to be gaining weight and it is depressing. Most days, I feel as if I dont even know who I am anymore. Slowly over the next few months he brought me down to 17. I also have a noticeable goiter in my neck. I have gained over 50 pounds in the past year to year in a half. During this time, my weight stayed the same. I am 23 years old and have been battling with hyperthyroidism for almost a year. I was diagnosed with graves about a year ago, doctor does not tell you that you will gain weight, I had to go and read up on the subject. I could eat a whole 8 in cake, and not be stuffed. Keep us posted as to the weight issue as I am also hoping to take up running again to aid in managing it and hope I will be successful. Before I was diagnosed, I was starving all the time. When I first found out that I had a hyper thyroid I weighed 120 lbs. Hopefully the nodules have decreased or at least remained the same size.
